Scotiabank and its employees are holding fundraising initiatives every month throughout the year and sharing the funds raised between Squamish Hospice Society and Helping Hands. There will be events such as raffles, silent auctions, penny saving. Check each month at the bank to see what is there for you to enter.

OnMay 3 and 4 the Garden Center is donating 10% of purchases to the Squamish Hospice Society if you let them know at time of purchase that you are in support of Hospice.

Also, on May 4 we are staging a Hike for Hospice from 10-2 at the Nexen Lands. If you want to participate you can pick up map and pledge forms at the Adventure Centre, Garibaldi Graphics, #2 Fire Hall, (across from Squamish Funeral Home), HTH, SGH, or Dr. Fothergill's office. We are, of course praying that we will not have to wear Nordic attire!! If you are not able to participate but would like to support "the cause" We would be more than happy to accept your pledges.

The Bereavement Support Group has become a part of Squamish Hospice Society. This is a great addition to the Society and will provide better continuity of service to the people of this area. Welcome, Wendy and Liz.

We now have a part time Bereavement/Hospice Coordinator who will be the contact person for support/assistance. It is Grace Neudorf Phone 604-848-5751 email hospiceseatosky@vch.ca

Grace takes the place of Hazel and Patsy though their numbers may still be left but as back up #'s if Grace cannot be reached for some reason.

Previous grants which we have received are from:

  • The B.C. Hospice/Palliative Care Association to assess the needs of the bereaved in this community and how we can best meet those needs.
  • The Squamish Community Foundation for a public awareness campaign.
  • The Squamish Community Foundation to fund the development and production of a Bereavement Resource Package.

    Past Events:

    Meeting June 2007:
    18 people attended. It was announced that we have now received our charitable status from the Fed. Govt.

    Members appointed to the Board are: Judith Fothergill, M.D., Pam Lang ( Palliative Care Coordinator), Darcy Reimer (Pastor), Nancy Edwards (Accountant), Hazel Giese and Patsy Reicker (Volunteer Co-coordinators). Members elected to the Board are: Gloria Healy for a 2 year term and Lois Cudmore and Penelope Kalopisi-Kennedy each for a 3 year term.

    The Board elected the following executive: Gloria Healy (President), Judith Fothergill (Vice-President), Nancy Edwards (Treasurer), and Lois Cudmore (Secretary).

    Committees will be formed with the following Board members heading each committee: Grant Proposals, P. Kalopisi-Kennedy; Public Awareness/Newsletter, H. Giese; Membership, L. Cudmore; General Fundraising, G. Healy. Roles and functions of these committees will be developed and ready for institution in the fall.

  • August 2006 became a registered society.
  • October 2006 completed a comprehensive volunteer manual which is a valuable resource and personal reference for helping people to deal with dying, death and grief.
  • October 2006 completed a volunteer training program. Volunteers are now available to the community.
  • November 2006 created two information pamphlets, "Who We Are" and "Your Hospice Volunteer" and distributed to various sites in the community.
  • November 2006 established a lending library. Vicky Marchant and Joyce Barone catalogued books covering a wide spectrum of palliative care and grief subjects from children to the elderly. The library books are housed in the palliative care lounge in SGH and may be accessed through the Women's Auxiliary Gift Shop, at the nursing station or by contacting Pam Lang Palliative Care Co-ordinator at 604-892-5211 local 6074.
  • On December 11th a Board Meeting was held, followed by a Voluteers meeting.
  • On Jan 8th. 2007, a Board Meeting was held followed by a Volunteers Meeting. .

    Squamish Hospice Society has been fortunate to enlist a volunteer who is willing to act as ombudsman to assist palliative patients and their families access services, benefits, etc. Contact may be made through Pam Lang, Palliative Care coordinator, Hazel Giese, Volunteer Coordinator or by asking any Hospice Volunteer or Board member.
