If you go to a web site that really appeals to you, you can see how the author of the page accomplished the task. To do this, just follow the instructions below.
1. Click on the "View" menu.
2. Click on the "Source" option. This will display the HTML code for the page in Notepad.
Now you can see how the page was made.
If you find a format of a web page that you like you can make yourself a copy of the HTML code and then change it to suit your purposes. To make yourself a copy of someone else's HTML code follow the instructions below.
1. View the source of the web page. (See instructions above)
2. Click on the "File" menu in Notepad.
3. Click on the "Save As " option.
4. Choose where you want to save the code from the "Save in:" pull-down menu. For example, if you want to save the file to a disk in your "A" drive, you click on the small black downward arrow to display the menu and then click on the "A" drive icon.
5. Go to the "File name:" text box and enter the name you want the file to have. Be sure to give it the extension ".html".
6. Click on the "Save" button.
Once the computer has finished saving the file you should notice that
the name of the file displayed in the title bar of the Notepad window has
changed to the new name that you gave the file.
Now you can make any changes you want to the HTML code in order to make
it your own page. Or you can do this just for the practice.
If you have been working on your web page for a while it is probably a good idea to see what it looks like. By viewing your web page you can easily find out if you have made any mistakes in entering information or HTML tags/code. It is best to check what your page looks like shortly after entering unfamiliar or complicated code because if you wait it may be hard to determine where the mistake occurred. Follow the instructions below in order to see what your web page looks like.
1. Open your Internet browser.
2. Click on the "File" menu.
3. Click on the "Open" option.
4. Click on the "Browse" button.
5. Use the "Look in:" pull-down menu to tell the computer where to look for the file. For example, if your file is on your "A" drive then select the menu using the small black down arrow and then select the "A" drive icon.
6. Select the file you want to view by clicking it once.
7. Check the "File name:" box to make sure you selected the correct file. If it is correct click the "Open" button. If it is incorrect then click the "Cancel" button and start again. (This is not the only way to do it but it is the easiest to explain.)
8. Again, confirm that you have selected the correct file by looking in the "Open:" box. If you have the correct file then click the "OK" button. If you have the wrong file name then click the "Cancel" button and start again. (This is not the only way to do this but it is the easiest to explain.)
If you clicked "OK" then your page should be displayed. Now you can see what it looks like.
This list of instructions can be a little confusing in written form. If I have confused you please contact me, Marianne, at the Squamish Public Library (892-3110) or check out some of the tutorial sites on the other handout.
