Movie Reviews

Red Violin: The best movie I've seen in a long time. Very engrossing. C.G. 18

Austin Powers II:
As good as the original. Even though some of the jokes are from the first movie they are still funny. Can't wait for #3. H.O. 19

Notting Hill:
Cute but it had a corny ending. The supporting cast was sooooo funny. P.T. 20

Shakespeare in Love:
Colin Firth did a good job as a snob. Gwyneth Paltrow was over-rated. Did we have to see her breast that many times? Joesph Fiennes - Ooh la la! Geofrey Rush - Good job! J.F. 15

The Blair Witch Project:
AWESOME! So scary! I'm never going camping again! D.I. 16

The 6th Sense:
Really good movie. H.P. 19

Deep Blue Sea:
Pretty good. The sharks were scary. R.E. 15

The Haunting:
First movie to ever make me jump! S.P. 16

Cruel Intentions:
I expected more. It moved too quickly. N.K. 16

Stepmom:
They didn't tell us that it was a tear jerker in the previews. H.W. 13

The Truman Show:
Jim Carrey = Oscar. 'Nuff said. G.D. 19

Cruel Intensions:
Moved too fast to have much depth but I still enjoyed it. You reap what you sowe. M.S. 20

8MM:
I liked it. Good movie. Disturbing, but Nicholas Cage was a good actor. Not a date movie. Intense, interesting and not for everyone. K.M. 19

A League of Their Own:
A feel-good-movie-of-the-year, classic type of movie that you can watch more than once. I reccommend it for a 5 for 5 for $5 rental. J.M. 16

Amadeus:
Loved it! It's one of my favourite movies of all time. It's pretty interesting to learn about Mozart. He's a totally eccentric guy! H.N. 18

(And it can even be of a movie you didn't like, and don't think others should go to see.)

Music Reviews

Austin Powers II - Soundtrack: Awesome! Good revamps of classic '60's songs! N.R. 16

The Cranberries - Bury the Hatchet:
This is the fourth album from the Irish alternative band, and a return to their earlier sound, after the slightly disappointing "To the Faithfully Departed". I enjoy their eclectic sound and the songs are as inovative as ever. Some of you will be glad to know that lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan. has toned down her vocals and decided to sing actural words on this album. C.G. 18

The Corrs - The Corrs:
This album is quite enjoyable to listen to, as it is a mixture of pop and classical Irish music. The Corrs are three sisters and a broher, who have a combination of original music, as well as some classics, such as "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, with new twists. I really enjoyed this light and fun album. G.K. 16

Austin Powers: The Spy who Shagged Me - Soundtrack:
This is an interesting mix of new songs ("Beautiful Stranger" - Madonna), old songs ("My Generation" - The Who), and classics that have been revamped ("American Woman" - Lenny Kravitz). I enjoyed the blend of music, which includes a comic version of Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" by Mike Myers as Dr. Evil. If you liked the movie, you'll love the soundtrack! Groovy baby, yeah! H.L. 15

Shania Twain - Come on Over:
Let me get this out of the way, I HATE country music... but I love this album. Shania ranges from pure country twang ("Man, I Feel Like a Woman") to almost pop ("That Don't Impress me Much") to soft romantic ballads ("You're Still the One!"). On top of all that, she's Canadian! What more can you say? N.E. 19

Bad Religion - No Control:
This is my favourite Bad Religion album. Every last song on this album is good. I reccommend it to anyone who likes punk and even those who don't. A good investment. Good car tape. K.M. 19

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill:
I don't really like rap, I don't really like R&B, I don't really like hip-hop but I like this album. It's got lots of variety and Lauryn has and incredible voice. The thing I hate about it is the message. I.P. 17

Shania Twain - Come on Over:
I'm not a country music fan usually but this album is pretty good. It's upbeat and most of the songs aren't really country. A lot of the songs are overplayed but it's still good background music. T.R. 17

Brittney Spears:
I don't even own this album but I can tell you it sucks. I'm sick of hearing "Oh Baby Baby" or whatever the song is. I could see someone 14 liking her but I feel it's silly for 18 and 19 year olds to be in love with her. K.M. 19

Book Reviews

Dave Barry is NOT Making This Up!: This book is so funny. It's a collection of articles written by Dave Barry for the Miami Herald, and each one is so funny! Dave Barry writes highly intelligent jokes (if you think boogers are funny) and amusing insights into everyday life (if you can relate to 20 fourty year old men doing percision lawn-mower dancing). I definitely recommend this book! C.G. 18

The Thunder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie:
I know, Agatha Christie books are old fashioned, and I don't usually read them, but this one was recommended to me by a friend, and I have to admit - I liked it. It is a classic mystery and the surprise ending was so not what I was expecting! If you like mysteries, this is a definite must! N.T. 15

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque:
This in one of the only books I have ever read that really and truly moved me. It is about a young German named Paul who is fighting in WWI. It follows him from the beginning of the war through all his trials and it has graphic references as to what it was like out there at the front. If you are a war/history buff, or if you are a pacifist, you will love this book as it realistically portrays war, and shows how fragile a human life is. V.H. 17

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson:
This is the book that the new blockbuster movie "The Haunting" is based on. It is a very good read, although at times it is hard to follow. It's classified as a horror, but I would refer to it more as fantasy. It's interesting but not very scary. B.P. 20

Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King:
I feel that this is one of King's better novels. It is about a woman named Dolores (Claiborne) St. George, who lives in a small island town in Maine. She is the main suspect in the death of her longtime employer, Vera Donovan. Dolores heads to the police station to clear her name in Vera's death, and to reveal a long forgotten secret in the mysterious death of her husband Joe. This is a good, engrossing book. However, there are no chapters, and there are no places where you can really stop, so it's a book for a day when there's nothing else to do! C.R. 16

The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel:
This is a wonderful book. It's about a young girl, Ayla, who is seperated from her mother and tribe after an earthquake. She's almost dead when another tribe, the Clan of the Cave Bear, find her and take her in. Life is not easy for her because she is different than the tribe. She belongs to the new species of human while the clan is still of the caveman. They think she is deformed but take her in anyway. The story tells of her and the clan's struggle to survive in a time of uncertainty. I definately recommend this book. K.M. 19

A Child Called "it" by Dave Pelzer:
It was horrifying and eye-shocking! It is scary to think that it is a real story. I couldn't put it down. M.H. 18
